WATERFORD ESTATE’S
SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

Waterford Estate boasts 120 hectares, with only 50 hectares of our land under vine, and the remaining 65 hectares dedicated to preserving the natural fauna and flora on the Helderberg. We farm only half of our land for the planting of vines in order to protect the natural vegetation and animal life of this area. Our estate uses several techniques and systems to preserve our environment and to use our resources optimally.

RESTORING AND MANAGING
OUR ECOSYSTEMS

We remove a number of alien species annually and replace these plants with indigenous trees that are approved by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), as part of an ongoing attempt to sustain our ecosystem.

SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES

Our Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) certification offers assurance that grape production is undertaken with careful consideration of the environment and that wine is produced in an environmentally responsible manner. The estate is one of 55 wine brands with WWF Conservation Champion status. All wines produced at Waterford Estate qualify for the Integrity & Sustainability Seal.

THE PORTO PROTOCOL

Waterford Estate is a member of The Porto Protocol - a global wine community sharing knowledge and solutions to bring climate action to life. The organisastion drives collaborative action by bringing together a network of change-makers and workable climate solutions for and within the wine world.

WASTE WATER MANAGEMENT

The water used in the cellar during the production process is recycled through our delta separation system and is stored in a dam in front of the winery. This water is then further treated by introducing oxygen back in by means of air sprayers before being used for irrigation.

REGENERATIVE FARMING PRACTICES

Growing cover crops in between our rows of vines is an easy method in limiting the effects of soil erosion, improving soil health, and can improve the water quality for the vines. Our cows don’t compact the soil as a tractor would, allowing for proper aeration of our vine's roots which aids in creating world-class grapes. We also employ the help of little creatures in the form of ladybugs to further maintain our organic practices... don’t be fooled by their small stature though, they protect our vines both day and night from potential pests!

INNOVATIVE STRUCTURE OF OUR BARREL ROOM

Our Barrel Room is known as The Cathedral and contains over 1400 French Oak barrels. The Cathedral was designed with a specific feature to ensure temperature regulation. Under each row of barrels, a part of the earth is exposed. This regulates the temperature and humidity of the room to the optimal level year round.
